Improving WHIP Support in FFmpeg
Aditya Banavi
Google Summer of Code 2026 · FFmpeg
During Google Summer of Code 2026, I worked on improving WebRTC support in FFmpeg, with a focus on WHIP, DTLS, ICE, networking, SDP, codec support, and RTC architecture.
My work progressed from fixing individual WebRTC and networking issues to adding codec support and extracting common RTC functionality into a reusable layer.

WebRTC & WHIP
Improving the reliability and capabilities of WebRTC ingestion in FFmpeg.
Networking
Working with ICE, UDP, non-blocking sockets, poll(), and DTLS.
Codec Support
Adding initial VP8 and VP9 support alongside existing H.264 handling.
RTC Architecture
Extracting common WebRTC functionality into a reusable rtc.c / rtc.h layer.
Key Contributions
- DTLS and GnuTLS interoperability fixes
- WHIP SDP and DTLS improvements
- ICE connectivity and socket-handling fixes
poll()-based ICE/DTLS handshake handling- Initial VP8 and VP9 support
- RTC architecture refactoring for WHIP/WHEP reuse
